I don't think Sherilyn Fenn gave up that much ground in comparison to Elizabeth Taylor looks-wise. In acting talent, maybe, and choice of projects definitely.

I didn't realize how freakishly beautiful Karen Gillan is until I saw a picture of her with a friend of mine I consider very attractive -- and the friend, who is all of 19, receded into the background like wallpaper next her luminosity.

She's pretty, no doubt, but she's not Jean Shrimpton pretty.
I think she's prettier, to be honest. When Karen Gillan's in a picture, I can't see the other people for several minutes, unless one of them is Alex Kingston. (And I've seen pictures of Gillan next to Benedict Cumberbatch.)
It seems like weird casting, in some respects, because Karen Gillan doesn't have angular features like the Shrimp, but then, she's also one of the most photogenic actors out there. I've seen a LOT of candids, and I don't think I've seen a bad one yet. They may exist, but they're rare rare rare.
