"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

I was charged for those minutes even though I never actually checked the messages.

WTF?

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

It makes a certain kind of sense because the caller had to use the local tower to leave the message. So it was as if I'd answered the phone and let them talk.

Next time, I can call and ask them to disable my voicemail while I'm gone. The same thing happened in Budapest, but the customer service rep didn't have that explanation for me.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Congrats, msbelle!

Our wings are not tired.

P-C, that is the stupidest thing I've heard in a while. No, they did NOT call a UK tower. They called here and your VM was probably on a server somewhere in India. That's hogwash. You should not be charged for time unless you're actually engaging the phone.

Did it ring in the UK?

Did you have the phone on and hit "ignore" or anything when the phone call came in? *That* might be your problem.

ETA: yeah, ita, I thought he meant he had the phone turned off and the calls went right to VM.

Yes.

Yeah, well, I guess that's engaging the phone.

ETA: and it looks like my carrier, AT&T outlines it such:

When your device is on:

•Calls that you do not answer that are routed to the AT&T voicemail system will be charged as an international roaming incoming call to your device.

•In addition, the foreign carrier's routing of that call to the AT&T voicemail system may generate an outgoing call charge from your device's location to the U.S.

•These charges apply even if the caller disconnects from the voicemail system without leaving a message.

If your device is turned off or in flight mode and the wireless network is off:

•When someone tries to call you, the call will go directly to your personal voicemail greeting.

•Since the network does not try to deliver the call to you in a foreign country, there are no international roaming charges.

hip deep in pie

I landed on a site that downloaded some malware. Somehow, either the malware or the steps I took to take it off, borked my internet connect. I just spent 2 hours messing with my router and modem until I realized it wasn't me. Fortunately, my service provider tech support got me back on fairly quickly.
