I'll take a look at some of the dye kits with the highlights involved, maybe. It's probably too complicated for me, though, I've always counted myself lucky that I can actually manage to dye it myself. I have been known to accidentally dye my ears purple.
(Speaking of purple, I also accidentally dyed my hair purple once. It was amazingly awesome. Sadly I don't think Princess Cruises would be OK with purple hair)
I finally signed up for Mint.com. Whooooa, so weird to see all that information in one place. Let's see what I can learn from it.
Yeah. I don't really know how I get away with it.
I started dyeing my hair in May. All of my white hair grabs onto the red part of the brown-with-red-highlights dye color and turns it all red, so that it looks almost burgundy when it's newly dyed. My mom and sis both said that it looks glaringly fake, and sis suggested I mix in a neutralizer, which I will do the next time I dye it. I'm stopping by Sally's Beauty Supply this afternoon to get the neutral color (4N to add to the 4R I currently use).
I found out from my dad this weekend that my grandpa's hair had gone from all brown to all-white practically overnight, when he was 43 years old. There was no traumatizing event, it just went white all at once.
Kathy, you might try one of those shampoos and/or conditioners made for brown hair. Towards the end of my dye cycle I find that my hair tends to get orange-y and I tone it down with the conditioner. You can buy it fairly inexpensively at the drug store.
I am intrigued by the growing in the grey as I notice it more and more. Mostly my grey runs through all my hair and just dulls the color, but I am starting to get that classic streak of grey at the temple. If I thought I could rock the grey streak I'd totally grow it out.
Kathy, you could try a neutral brown instead of a warm one.

You could keep dying the rest of it and leave the grey streak alone...

Yeah, that could work. I'm not sure how much of a streak is there yet, but I definitely see a silvery halo in that corner.
Thanks for the advice! I'll ask the person at Sally's about the hair color--my sister said that 4N would be the neutralizing brown to add to the reddish brown of the 4R (I'll just use 1 ounce of each added to the developer).
And I'll look for that brown-hair conditioner. I know that all of my swimming doesn't help the hair dye stick around longer than five weeks before fading tremendously (I hate using a swimcap, so the chlorine gets to the hair more than it would otherwise).
I'm letting my hair get longer, trying to grow it out to bob-length. Post-surgery, it's really curly, much more than before (it was wavy before), and I think a flapper-style bob would be really cute.
