Oh so random: There's a guy with a similar last name to mine who apparently collects "family" members, who just asked to be my friend on facebook.
My sister is Facebook friends with a bunch of people of no particular relation with our same somewhat unique last name. I find it very weird.
Relatedly, I have s(lastname) as my facebook URL and got a friendly message on Fb from a guy whose first name is s(lastname) saying "damn, you grabbed my name!"
All the cops were busy dealing with the bomb situation in the city. They had to 1) find out about the island, realize it was that bad, and 2) get a swat team together.
And get there. This is the timeline Al Jazeera put together:
4:50pm: Vacationers at a campground begin to hear shooting across the lake on Utoya, an island where the youth wing of the Labour Party is holding a retreat.
5:38pm: SWAT team is dispatched from Oslo. It drives, deciding that taking a police helicopter would take longer.
6:00pm: The team arrives at the lake but struggles to find a boat to cross over to the island.
6:20pm: The SWAT team arrives on the island.
6:35pm: The shooting suspect puts down his weapons and surrenders to police.
The sad part is, the book will probably sell, just because Tyra's name is on it. But that's an impressively awful summary.
I just tuned into
The Transporter
right at the oil scene. There is a God, and she loves me.
But that's an impressively awful summary.
Tookie De La Crème! TOOKIE DE LA CRÈME!
There are a lot of redesigned emergency drills in Norwegian law enforcement's future. I think "it can't happen here" had some effect everyone's response. Of course, hindsight is 20-20.
Didn't they say, too, that the police were so busy in Oslo, the news was a little late getting to them, or them reacting to it?
As soon as this damn last load of laundry is done, I'm taking my third shower of the day.
I thought better of going to see Captain America this afternoon when they told me the theater had 7 seats left, so I went grocery shopping instead. Turns out getting your steaks fresh cut by the butcher and cooking them an hour later really makes a difference; I just cooked a $2.75 chuck eye that tasted better than what I usually get in a steakhouse for $15 or so. I literally licked my plate clean.
I think the bigger problem was that because they were isolated, nobody knew what was happening. In the reports I've seen, those who had phones were texting to be quiet, and were communicating with each other or family -- possibly because this guy was dressed as a policeman. One story says someone posted a call for help on Twitter.
Just ran across found a more recent timeline based on police logs. Assuming I can trust Google translation:
5:27: First report to local police.
5:30: Police in Oslo get a report.
5:38: At the lake, local police ask for backup from Oslo.
5:52: More local police arrive at the lake.
6:03: Local police are told a boat is en route.
6:09: SWAT team arrives at the lake.
6:25: SWAT and police reach the island.
