I'm iffy on the book in general. At times I was so painfully aware of how derivative it was that it took me out of the story. But some parts were really engrossing. It was just very uneven.

Jeepers. I was having a silly conversation with the brother of my BFF on Facebook. (I haven't seen him in 25 years and have rarely even spoken to him on Facebook, so this is not in any way an actual relationship.) He was spouting feel-good aphorisms and I was playing cynical Devil's advocate. This morning I get a long message from him that he "doesn't need all this negativity from me" and he had a crush on me since high school and he would still like believe I'm that girl who can conquer the world. I responded (carefully) that I was just messing around, I didn't think either of us were taking it seriously, and I didn't mean to upset him. Then he wrote back breezily that it's fine, he just wants me to be happy. FFS. I need to get a drink and ask G. if her brother's love life has imploded or something.
