Tom, if you have 3 weeks in California, you could do southern and northern in that time. I happen to like San Diego quite a bit if you can get all the way down there.
I vote for Santa Cruz beach boardwalk, San Franciso Piers, eating everywhere to start. Do you like hiking, surfing, studio tours?

Monterey Bay Aquarium. Santa Cruz. Depending on the time of year, there may be Shakespeare in the Park in Golden Gate Park or just outdoors at a bunch of different wineries. If you come at the end of September, there's a massive food truck festival at Jack London Square. There are bookstores you haven't even discovered yet. If you time it right, you might be able to make it to a pillow fight or a cardboard tube battle.
Three weeks? I've been here my entire adult life and haven't scratched the surface.
Or, more realistically, a Scola West Coast tour, San Diego to Seattle.

You have to remember that being a 5-time Olympic medalist means Hilary Knight has been playing hockey at an elite level at least 16 years. It's impossible for her to be a teenage girl less than 16 years old, thus the President's complete lack of interest.
Tom, if you're doing a pan-West Coast thing maybe touring the wine country for a few days would be relaxing and fun? Or hiking in the Redwood Park near Crescent City?
