Alcoholics often become hooked on sugar after they quit drinking. I skipped the alcoholism part of my family heritage and went straight to sugar addict. [snip] If hungry and offered the choice between a delicious meal and a slab of chocolate cream pie, I'd go for the pie every time.
Me too. In fact, the ADHD kid would (did) mug a kid to take his candy bar. The other had no sugar jones as a kid, but had alcohol-related problems as an adult. I think it's the same chemical brain thing--just luck or randomosity when it manifests and for which substance. Alcohol is just sugar, after all.
Something an AA person once told me, ask an alcoholic "How much did you drink?" Answer: ALL of it. Till it was gone.
Ask me or my kid how much candy/cake/ice cream did you eat? ALL of it. Till it was gone. Till I was sick, and then went back for more. How does that differ from alcoholic behavior? Except in the inebriation affect.
I will actually choose protein over sugar.
Only because I can actually feel what sugar does to me now, and I hate the feeling. I still have the mouth-addiction though.
