Bob's learned to live with tragedy, but he knows that this tragedy is one that won't ever leave him or get better.

Does Japan use a different scale, not Richter, for earthquakes? I am seeing wildly different numbers reported. It doesn't change what happened, clearly. But it is confusing me and since I can't do a damn thing else...

I think it's just early, so the reports are inconsistent. It'll probably be a clearer picture in the morning.

USGS is saying 8.9, which is consistent with the report you heard earlier, right?

Yes.

They only had a 7.1 earlier that I could clearly see. Though that could have been the aftershock showing more prominently. They had the 6.8 pre showing too.

Man, that is a big earthquake.

And I should learn to navigate beyond the shakemap.

Must be. I am hoping more of my Hawaii peeps check in soon, although there won't be any news from there for a while. One of my friend's friends says the pharmacy where they work is asking workers to stay overnight to handle the rush if everybody freaks out wanting to buy supplies.

I am thinking that parts of China seriously felt this one, yes. It was a huge quake and political lines might make them seem farther apart, they are geographically quite close.

Seventh largest earthquake recorded.
