Buying an el cheapo rice cooker has saved me from many pots of burned rice.
Wallybee's parents stayed with us for a month before Ryan was born, during which time they got to know our rice cooker. When they came back for Ryan's first year, they brought back a Chinese "THIS R SRS BIZNESS" rice cooker for us. I regard myself as well-served in the rice department.
I boil pasta the way I make rice (put the pasta in with whatever water and then boil it down until the pasta is done). With brown rice, I just use an excess of water and I boil it for ~20ish minutes then I drain the rice. Perfect.
However, I also use a rice cooker. In fact, I just got a new one. I wanted a zojirushi but got a similar model from Oster for a fraction of the price.
I use a steamer like this [link] for rice. It always comes out well and it doesn't matter if I forget about it. Plus it can be used for lots of other things, and I don't have the space or inclination for single use appliances.
Suzi, I take Abilify. What would you be taking it for, if you don't mind me asking?
The hope was to replace the Welbutrin. I have a bunch of non-specific symptoms that fall under a few known issues i have. The doc is trying to systematically tackle each. Thyroid was out of whack, so that is now medicated. My iron is hosed so we are finally addressing that. Then there is also depression. I take Citilopram, which helps a bunch, but my doc was hoping the Abilify would help give me that kick until the iron was back to normal.

See, I never know when to wonder if mine has lost its efficacy. I've been on the same dose since I started it (Lexapro, then Citalopram) and I know the one time I went off it, I flipped -- serious highs and lows and awfulness.
And this past year has been really stressful, but I don't know if I should wait till situational stuff balances out or if I actually need something to give it a kick, because there are a *lot* of down days lately.
Well, I can tell you that I've really liked Abilify so far-- the only notable side effect has been a decrease in appetite. And I had a twitchy eyelid for a little while at first, but that went away. Since I started taking it I've been able to sleep like a normal person for the first time in I don't even know how long, and I'm notably less anxious.
I cook my rice like pasta, and then strain it. It makes the kind of starchy, sticky rice I likem
