I find it charming that a couple of my neighbors have taken to calling me for distraction/support when having awful commutes home. Just talked one down after watching the car ahead do a 360 and crash into the rail on one of the scary overpasses into downtown.

Are your sister and BIL okay, Sox?
Should be - Christchurch is on a very volatile plate right now. Auckland's a couple hours' flight north, and, I think, more prone to volcanos than earthquakes. I could be wrong. I've dropped a line to them and to the people we met from Christchurch. Hopefully they're ok.
Thanks for asking JZ.
Loki wanted out. He dug in the snow and lasted 30 seconds before he was digging at the door. The whole house hates snow.
Sis & BiL checked in - all ok & in Auckland.
I am starting to get a little afraid of the end of the world...
For some reason, I dreamed last night that there was a Hollaback-Congress. I'm not convinced that HuffPo qualifies.

Seriously.
Sox, so glad your people are okay.
I'm so sorry to hear about Christchurch. It's certainly unusual that there'd been a 7.1 back in September, with little loss of life. This one was in broad daylight, so more people out for things to fall on, but it seems to have been more along a "New Madrid" extended rumbler that started liquefying buildings that stood up well in the previous big one.
Sox, so glad your people are okay.
Thanks Brenda
yah, Theodosia, the news is saying that this one was a lot shallower, although a 6.3. We saw a lot of damage from the September one while we were there, but we weren't in town for either of the big aftershocks that happened in December. The worst part seems to be time of day, plus the shallowness - lots of liquefaction, lots of towers coming down that were marked safe after inspection from the last quake.
Shoveled out my car by 8:30. Someone kindly did my walk and steps, so I did the neighbors'. Also MY ROAD GOT PLOWED!!!! It's kind of a miracle. Everyone was all WHUH?!
I need to go out and shovel out to my trash cans (no surprise no trash trucks this AM) and also the road turning onto the exit street to a main drag. Plow didn't exactly do a good job there.
BUT MY ROAD GOT PLOWED!!!
