Hooo-boy. Um, simply put, the lead vocalist is a huge jerk.
The more involved explanation is that Abney Park used to be a struggling Goth band who tried really hard to convince people they were a Bigger Deal than they actually were, would try to recruit any girl willing to wear a corset to be a "back-up singer", and picked fights with any talented musician that crossed the lead vocalist's path. And then they recruited a back-up singer/dancer who had the (admittedly brilliant) notion that they should switch to a steampunk look. Ta-da, they started getting press, and now the lead singer vehemently denies that they were ever, EVER a wannabe goth band.
In other words, scene drama and egos. I have no patience for the lead singer, but we are very good at being polite to each other at events we are both at. But like I said, the violinist (Nathan) is a complete darling.
