Hec and quester, it does unfortunately pay like crap, but jobs tend to be at univerities so at least there are decent benefits and good job security. I'd say first find someone local to do an informational interview and see what the job landscape is in your place. Library school is a 2-year degree; archives is often a certificate done as part of a library degree or as part of, say, a history Master's. Look at the websites for the American Library Association or the Society of American Archivists for a list of programs and more info.

It's all such a crap shoot, IME, I figure do whatever you feel up to. Although I have been able to trace my last two colds directly to the person I got them from. But! There have been many diseases around my office I've avoided.
So I guess I really figure do what you feel like, but avoid touching people.
