From the Washington Post:
Earthquake in Pakistan, with a magnitude of 7.4, felt from Dubai to Delhi
By Melissa Bell
An earthquake has hit southwest Pakistan with a magnitude of 7.4, CNN reports. Twitter lit up with the news that people felt the earth move from Dubai to the outskirts of Delhi.
Reuters reports the quake struck 34 miles west of Dalbandin at 1:23 a.m. local time on Wednesday. The Pacific Tsunami Center said the onshore quake had not triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean.
Me and Tom. It's a keeper. Yay, Tom!
Yikes, that's a big earthquake.
Fantastic picture of you and Scola, ita.
Governor: Only Christians are my brothers
Robert Bentley, the new Republican governor of Alabama, delivered an oddly exclusionary message on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Birmingham News (via Political Wire) reports:
''I was elected as a Republican candidate. But once I became governor ... I became the governor of all the people. I intend to live up to that. I am color blind."
...
''But if you have been adopted in God's family like I have, and like you have if you're a Christian and if you're saved, and the Holy Spirit lives within you just like the Holy Spirit lives within me, then you know what that makes? It makes you and me brothers. And it makes you and me brother and sister."
Bentley added, ''Now I will have to say that, if we don't have the same daddy, we're not brothers and sisters. So anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother."
That is just creepy as hell.
Well, it says his press secretary clarified later: "He is the governor of all the people, Christians, non-Christians alike." So he's still including less worthy people.
Creepy as hell, and un-Christian. Has he never encountered the parable of the good Samaritan, or the passage where Christ talks about all the people who run around with Lord, Lord on their lips but never visited the least of his children in prison or clothed them when they were naked or fed them when they were starving?
The entire point of both of those is, your brothers and sisters are the ones you take care of when they're broken and who take care of you when you're broken. Not the ones who've said the magic saving words, or the ones the rule book says are your brothers and sisters.
What -- and I say this with all the love in my heart, and purely in hopes that he comes to embrace my humble, gentle corrective words and see them bear fruit in a fuller vocation in his life -- what a gigantic fucking asshole.
