I went off antidepressants mostly to see if I still needed them. I hoped some of the weight I'd gained would come off (didn't), and that I would get back to being a slightly more prolific writer (haven't).
Ugh, Tom's going through this right now- he gained like 75 pounds in a year from antidepressants. He went off them, was miserable, and went back on a different one that worked (but had different side effects.) So far he hasn't gained any weight, but it looks like the weight he had gained is here to stay.
