Spike's Bitches 46: Don't I get a cookie?

[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risqué (and frisqué), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.

I’m responsible for my own happiness? I can’t even be responsible for my own breakfast! (Bojack Horseman)

Neighborhood name. That's the norm for most neighborhoods, except for the Lower Ninth (the Upper Ninth is called Bywater) and the Seventh Ward. (ETA to fix my error)

I originally thought that Bayou St. John was a sub-nabe of Mid-City but I looked it up on our website (npnnola.com) and it is indeed broken out separately. NPN did a lot of work in identifying neighborhoods v. sub-neighborhoods/neighborhood associations so that's where I turn for validation on that. Also 'cause that's where I work.

You're a goddess! I was getting the gist that neighborhood name was mostly the norm, but of course, had seen a few differences, like with Lower Ninth, so I wanted to make sure I as using the appropriate nomenclature because nothing will throw a reader out more than a detail like that.

Of course there is Holy Cross, which is a neighborhood within the Lower Ninth Ward parameters and called by the neighborhood name, which is the kind of thing that will confuse anyone...

Basically, Holy Cross (though over the Industrial Canal and in the Lower Ninth) has historically been white/higher income (even had its own private boys school there till the storm) and must be separated from the Lower Ninth poor and black denizens. (cue eye roll).

You know, oddly enough, I picked up on that subtlety and it didn't confuse me. (Looking at demographics & property values is fascinating that way.)

For whatever reason, New Orleans is an easy city for me to pick up on its quirks. Perhaps because it's very similar to Miami in that it's a city that's not of the US in a lot of ways. It's set up and operates very differently from anywhere else and for that reason, I love it a lot, even though it's been years since I've visited. I was actually telling Lewis the other night that it's a pity I have such low tolerance for heat, humidity, and bugs the size of aircraft carriers, because there's so much about the city that appeals to me.

We won’t stop until everyone is gay.

Yeah, that was a fustercluck of epic proportions.

Do you know what happened?

Also, I believe the Seventh Ward is subdivided into Bywater (the L strip along river and Industrial Canal) and St. Claude.

Every now and then, I think I might actually be a little odd.

Erin, insent in re: your Press post.

And another, from my work email (ieee.org).

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

The snacks shouldn't have more than 170 calories and every meal and snack needs to have a minimum of 5 grams of protein in them.

I pretty frequently snack on chickpeas. Right out of the can, rinsed, and then I usually sprinkle some nutritional yeast on them, but that's not really necessary. First google hit says that half a cup of chickpeas has 135 calories and 7 grams of protein.

Our wings are not tired.

Furthermore, I would like to add that literal curling into a ball is also perfectly acceptable behavior. Behavior in which I indulged Saturday night between sets. I was barely hanging on anyway, and then singing just took the rest of what I had to give, and then the pastor started talking about Japan, and it was just too damn much and I was all sobby and didn't want anyone to see. So I went behind the last stage curtain and laid my cheek on the floor and went fetal. No one saw me. Except my band leader. Who, bless him, totally pretended he didn't. And when I got myself together and walked back out into the greenroom, he drew me into a conversation about his new computer (air), total geek fodder, and a great way to get me back on board with the living world. He knew, and he knew I knew he knew, but he just gently brought me into normalcy. He's awesome. And then I went out for the second set and rocked the mic.

Sorry to backtrack a bit, but something just occurred to me after reading Liese's post. And that is, sometimes you can fight the fetal reaction and be shredded for weeks whereas giving in to it completely can be exactly the tonic you need, and actually allow healing to happen so much more rapidly.

I've had situations just like Liese's (and Maria's, and so many of you) where the longer I tried to be strong, just for the sake of ego or needing to always be the strong one, whatever, the less I could cope. But a glass of red wine, a watching of a really sad movie (or god, I put on Joni Mitchell), and totally going fetal for an evening? With heaving sobs? Felt GREAT in the morning. It's like the fetal is there as your reset. USE IT.
