Re unclogging drains, there's a flat long thin piece of plastic with "teeth" on it that you stick down the drain and then pull back out, and all the gooky stuff comes out with it. I think it's called a Zip-it. I bought it a Lowes.

Zip its are cheap and usually do a great job. I think I still have one around here somewhere (they're disposable--I only use them once).
