City of Thieves is about two young guys on a week-long quest (I won't say for what) in Leningrad under seige. There's some violence, but it is not a typical "war" story.

My school is buying I Am The Messenger, also by Zusak and quite great, to read with all the 10th graders.
I didn't love the narrative conceit of The Book Thief, but I pushed it up on my TBR list because my college roommate recently signed and got signed with his agent. I was pleasantly surprised.
Megan, have you read The Last Rendezvous by Anne Plantagenet? Heard good things but it's not in my library system yet.
Nor mine, but it's on order and I just requested it.
Wolf Hall
I will add this to my Booker Prize TBR list. You are the second person to recommend it recently.
Pix, I'm so sorry. I know how much she meant to you.
Oh Pix, I am so sorry. Zoe will undoubtedly be missed.
Megan, the other Hilary Mantel is A Place of Greater Safety which is a historical fiction from Robespierre's POV, I think. It's on my TBR list and in my holds for the library. Mantel, is such a beautiful writer, and I can't wait to see how she addresses Robespierre. Plus I was just so impressed with Wolf Hall.
So many books, so little time...
ETA: Ooh, and I'm down to hold #119 for the final Dragon Tattoo book. Yay?
Sorry to hear about Zoe, she was a good dog.
We caved and bought Hornets Nest but given that 4 of us will end up reading it, I feel okay about it.
I bought DH a copy of The Road for Father's Day
Cash, someone is reading this for our quest book salon and I'm looking forward to hearing about since I've heard so many good things.
Yeah, I caved and bought it at Target. If you still haven't gotten it by the end of the month, megan, I can bring it to town on my next trip...
So sorry to hear about your dog, Pix.
