And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

But the rhythm method can be fairly effective itself, no? Given a regular cycle and a woman paying attention.

For values of "paying attention" which include charting cervical mucus and temperature. NSM just watching the calendar. (And after pregnancy you won't have had a cycle to keep track of for almost a year, so the first time you ovulate afterwards you won't know it for at least 2 weeks.)

Punishingly Intricate

And when breastfeeding wasn't so popular?

My brother and I are 15 months apart because my mother's understanding was that you couldn't get pregnant while breastfeeding.

A couple of kids I nannied for were 9 months apart. (The second did come a little early, but not by much compared to the mother's other pregnancies.)

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

I mean, I would never be Doing It without bc from the store, which is why I have no real idea how fertility awareness works.

(And by "store" I include the doctor, of course.)
