"This bar smells like kerosene and stripper tears."

Or other people I've known in a professional setting (i.e. clients, co-members of a professional association etc.)

The artist formerly associated with cupcakes.

Does one populate this with previous co-workers?

Yes, or as DJ says, other people you've known in a professional setting. I've been one of those references for various friends before.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

I swear my last job asked for three personal references, which I think is just weird.

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

Getting my license in CA was a total PITA. I had to take a written test!

At some point you'll need to take it again just to renew. I thought that was normal. Is California the only state that makes you retake the written?

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

In NJ, you don't need to take any tests to renew your license, not even eyesight. You just need to have a stack of various forms of ID.

It's five thousand for kissing, ten thousand for snuggling... End of list.

If I had to guess employer references are too generic in order to avoid suit from disgruntled former employees. Personal references probably weed out Coneheads, at least.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

You guys are all witness to my requirements gathering and overall project coordination. Wanna be my refs?

Never mind, on reflection.

No, I don't think I will - me, quoting Captain Steve Rogers, to all of 2020

Personal references probably weed out Coneheads, at least.

"Yes, 'Jack' is quite a decent fellow. When consuming mass quantities, he is most effective. His dentition is in order. We recommend 'Jack' for immediate employment at your consumables production and delivery facility as 'potato superheating technician'."

HR at that place called former supervisors directly, instead of either the personal references asked for on the application, or the professional references I had provided. So she talked to the boss who had fired me.

Luckily, he didn't say that.

And she was so much better than the HR who came after her!!

Friends don't let friends read "Atlas Shrugged"

Although he is from a small town in France ... Remulac, I believe.
