I generally use the is it visibly fuzzy test with yogurt. Followed in rapid succession by the sniff test, and then the spoon to see if it is too dry test and then the teeny bit on the tongue to check for poison test.
I've only misjudged once or twice.

food update - finished off a bottle of cranberry juice concentrate. Brother took olive oil; red wine, rice wine, and raspberry vinegar; and something else. finished off some pumpkin seed snacks.

In addition to many other vegetables, I got cabbage in my CSA box. Recipe suggestions for cabbagey goodness? (Other than corned beef. Mostly because I have no beef in the kitchen.)
