I'm not sure how old he is, but I heard him use the word 'newfangled' one time, so he's gotta be pretty far gone.

I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

I figure most non-DNA based ancestry tracking requires that my great(to whatever power) grandmothers were telling the truth about whose kids they bore. While I'm willing to believe Mom on that, and my grandmothers (given how much my parents look like their fathers), when we get to my great grandmothers and beyond, who knows? I never even met those people--I should be making claims about their fidelity? There've been people who screw around all throughout history, and I've no reason to believe my family tree has been unaffected.

So who knows where all my pre-1900 ancestors came from, really?

Whoot whoot chikat!

Last day in the office. Last commute on the mta.

Woe to the fucking wicked.

My great-grandmother was in the DAR, so I qualify. Of course, her son married a 1st-generation German-American with whom she never really got along.

Enjoy your last day, msbelle.

Our wings are not tired.

The ancestry on my mother's side is clear, but dad was all mutt. My kids 57 varieties or so.

Have a good last day msbelle!

My company is doing a community dig at the moment. It's being blogged here - [link]

The pictures by the kids down the bottom are just the best.

And in honor of my last commute, more grumpy guidance for appropriate subway behavior from me.

Rushhour is not the time to:

Let your toddler practice walking on stairs
Move furniture via subway
Read the paper open wide
Take out your summer kids camp group
Panhandle with your musical instruments

hip deep in pie

Just in time for your holiday festivities, the featured recipe on Cook's Illustrated is blueberry pie, with the vodka crust recipe: [link]

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

OMG, those are classic, msbelle.

My commute was super empty, even compared to what it usually is (not crowded). Big ups to Boston and commuting in odd directions and not on public transportation!

Ooh, Sue, I'm supposedly getting blueberries from my CSA today... We'll see how many there are and if I just eat them as-is.

We won’t stop until everyone is gay.

First world problems, ahoy! So I've been doing this massive search for retro swimsuits, right? Yesterday I finally looked at Lands End (duh) and they have a fabulous suit that is NOT HALTER NECK at a great price [link] they had dark teal, but only in my size. Well, due to migraine-induced lassitude I didn't finish ordering it last night, and now the teal is all gone. They only have my size in brown or black. Woe, woe is me! ::staples hand to forehead::
