I'm pretty sure what we learned when trying to grow stuff in my childhood was that anything that grew above the ground was OK (tomatoes, herbs), and stuff underground just didn't grow (carrots), which was a good thing anyway.

When I was a gardener, I also got to feel like I was in Little House on the Prairie. I once fought to save my poor little lettuces from hail by covering them with a shower curtain and bricks. And I yelled at rabbits!
Garv grew some delicious tomatoes last year, and he's done pretty well with herbs. My favorite thing was the fruit trees we had in Florida when I was in middle school, though. Walking outside to pluck a mango or a lemon was just awesome.
We decided to plant in raised beds, just because we had no idea what was in the soil and thought it was safer, as well as better on the DH's bad back.
I am ready to go to raised beds after a couple of summers because it's a battle to keep the grass and weeds from encroaching in my dug out beds. Stupid grasses!!

Em achieves the rare Cool and Cute combination. It's a good year to be a Giants fan too.
I'm totally wiped after my second day at the baseball field. Yesterday five hours entertaining Matilda; today with an hour and a half hand scrubbing at a fundraising car wash. But these fields are completely without shade so you just feel sun-drained after so much time outside.
Third wave of thunderstorms moving through now.
Yeah, it's suddenly pouring sort of biblically at the Mets game now, too.
Took Matilda to a preschool classmate's birthday party today, and was gratified (a) to have both his parents corner me and thank me for bringing her because he really, really, really likes her and he'd been pestering both of them about whether or not she'd come to his party (not that he paid any attention to her at the party itself, but apparently he was happy just knowing she was there, and she was the only classmate he'd been really worried about), (b) to see her being about 9,000 times more socially adept than I am at my very best (in that regard, nothing would make me happier than having a child who doesn't resemble me even one tiny bit), and (c) to have another parent corner me to rhapsodize at length about how sweet Matilda is to her toddler daughter.
Matilda ate a metric shitton of strawberries, charmed everyone with the mermaid dress (she also wore it to church and slew the congregation DED), and is now curled up on the couch wearing a hoodie fastened at the neck so she can be Raven while she watches Teen Titans. How much more good could the day get? None. None more good.
No! Wait! I just remembered that there's cabernet fudge from Perkins still in the fridge! Well played, Sunday evening, well played!
so she can be Raven while she watches Teen Titans.
OMG. Her and Emeline are going to RULE. THE. WORLD. Em is having trouble deciding between being Jesse from Toy Story 2 (or our own Cowgirl Jesse - Em just wants a red cowgirl hat), Supergirl, or Robin (if I make it like the 60's tv show costume and can be a skirt).
