I want to share this with you guys (I already did on facebook), but my friend C wrote this about reform
So, most likely having no idea what all the adults have been debating lately, one of my 7th grade boys jokingly asked today if I would consider "reforming" my grading policy. I threw a quick "No" his way before sitting and thinking about the issue. If he were a bit older, perhaps I would give him this more lengthy response...
He is operating in a reformed classroom. The grading scale has been expanded to a 10 point scale, giving him the opportunity to make grades previously out of his reach with no real extra effort required. What was previously an 91B is now an A. The 65% that would have failed a student last year now allows them to pass at a mid-D. Whether a student chooses to perform at this level is up to them. The opportunity is there.
Our classroom operates under reformed educational standards. Each student has the equal opportunity to succeed. I cannot restrict education from any child for bizarre reasons....I cannot restrict students at all from gaining a free and equal education. I am required by law to make accommodations for the special needs of students. I am required by policy to modify my lessons for students of all aptitudes, learning styles, ethnicities, backgrounds, and talents.
I have to compete to keep my job. Teaching certificates are no longer granted for a lifetime. I must update my skills, continue my education, implement technology, and adapt. If what I'm doing does not satisfy the needs and requirements of my students, I can be removed from my job. I require alot from my students to keep my classroom working. They must all contribute to our learning community or else it ceases to progress and we will be back to book work and the success or failure of a student falling on aptitude rather than teaching.
This student of mine is getting reform. If what he really was asking for was "repeal"--let's see....I would sit behind my desk, let those who can succeed on their own do so, ignore those needing the most assistance, let outdated material and policy guide my classroom, and penalize students for what they may or may not have learned in previous years.
Is my classroom perfect? Not at all. Is it different than it was when I was a student? Yes. Does change occur painlessly or immediately? Never. What works, you keep. When things are broken, you fix them.

You have to remember that being a 5-time Olympic medalist means Hilary Knight has been playing hockey at an elite level at least 16 years. It's impossible for her to be a teenage girl less than 16 years old, thus the President's complete lack of interest.

OMG Y'all! The listing for my co-op got out early and someone has called my agent wanting to see it this weekend. Frantically cleaning. not sure I can get it straightened enough. The stuff is getting picked up for storage on the 5th, so I am kinda in the middle of packing stuff into boxes.

I have just discovered that my Apple TV remote can control my new laptop. Which? Irritating. On the other hand, I can watch movie trailers straight from the laptop without even having to go to the Apple site. Then again, what about when I want to watch my Apple TV?
