Greece's financial crisis threatens to take down all of Western civilization - a civilization they themselves founded. A rather tragic irony - which is something they also invented. - Jon Stewart

Evan Lysacek's exhibition skate was beautiful.

Am I the only person petty enough to wish he'd just gone out, hauled ass across the rink, landed a quad, and skated off?

That would rock.

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

Not the only person.

"It didn't taste good. It tasted soooo horrible. It tasted like....a vodka martini." - Matilda

In retrospect, perhaps I just resented the cows because I had to do chores every day starting at age 7-ish.

Also, some cabbage is smarter than cows.

Since my father and grandfather spent their careers in meat packing and my great-grandfather was a butcher, I never had any illusions about where meat came from. I am glad it's easier to get cage-free eggs.

A lot of the animal-friendly claims on egg cartons aren't actually regulated in the US. [link]

Bob's learned to live with tragedy, but he knows that this tragedy is one that won't ever leave him or get better.

I think he had a classmate whose father died.

I suspected it was something like this when you first mentioned it.

this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

We went out to the local dive and I got a damn fine burger. Easier than killing and butchering a cow myself, especially at this time of night.

And you know how sometimes you're hungry for something specific, and you get it, and it's just the best damn thing in the world? This burger was that. So. Fucking. GOOD.

I also had a salad, so I cheerfully killed across the spectrum of animals and plants.

Ah, that's a whole 'nother level of scary for him.

There was an episode of Little House on the Prairie where a baby died. I freaked the fuck out. I didn't know a baby could die.

Wikipedia tells me I was four and my sister about seven months old. I do not envy my mother that one. I'm tearing up a little thinking about it, actually. No doubt the birth of my niece yesterday is part of my getting upset, but I remember that freak out pretty vividly.

Parenting. Not for the weak.
