Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
There's a huge difference between thinking you're a nifty person when you are a nifty person or trying to be one, and thinking you're a nifty person when you actively destructive to other people and thinking you are nifty allows you to dismiss anyone's concerns about your behavior. I think of a friend's Ex who asserted that the fact that he shoved her into a wall and punched her in the stomach was okay because after all, they were arguing and he "didn't hit her in the face". He thought he was so nifty that the problem was totally hers and not his.

There's also a difference between thinking "I deserve love" in a general not-being-suicidal sense and thinking "I deserve a date right now at this stage in my life because hey, the last time I exchanged sex for cocaine was, like, over a week ago."
