Oh, my mother's never going to enjoy IMing as a replacement for hearing my voice. I wouldn't expect her to. Burbling is different, plus there's the sensory aspect.
Hell, people wouldn't have phone anxiety if there wasn't something very different about it, for good or ill.
Yeah, it was just calling me while we were already having a conversation that seemed weird, not preferring phone over IM in general. But then again, she also started IMing me while I was talking on the phone to my dad, who was sitting right next to her, because interrupting him to tell him to tell me things was taking too long, so I might just give up trying to figure this out.

I could use some kitty~ma. Harvey is going to the litter box every few minutes. He isn't completely blocked up, but I will be calling the veterinary clinic as soon as it opens to get him in ASAP
