Yeah, I was raised in a world where elderly people get a little slack for bigoted or sexist remarks.
Doesn't mean its alright. Doesn't mean she should have kept her job. But maybe America's collective Mom could sit us down and say, "Sometimes older people have had terrible personal experiences or were raised a certain way and have prejudices they've had for a really long time and its hard for them to change. That doesn't mean that ______ is an evil person and doesn't do lots of nice things like ______. I know its hard, but sometimes that's the way it is."

FTR, Helen Thomas was the commencement speaker for my undergrad class. Don't recall a word she said. There may have been booze involved. But as a Communications Major, I thought it very cool that head of the White House press corp was talking to us.
Didn't know about the regional heritage. Kinda shocking that it wasn't mentioned.
