which is part of what made it so damn funny
Natter 64: Yes, we still need you
Off-topic discussion. Wanna talk about corsets, duct tape, or physics? This is the place. Detailed discussion of any current-season TV must be whitefonted.
Aww, I hear you javachik! Sadly, next time I'm in your part o' town (er, next week) I think you'll be all European and stuff.
Which isn't NOW in any case (hey, I could use some snuggles!) but still.
Damn it, Meara. What day are you here? I leave Thursday morning but Wednesday night is book group night. I'd love to see you. I could give you snuggles for cupcakes!!
A samurai sword sounds much more efficient than a baseball bat, I have to say.
Yeah, but with the baseball bat you get the contact high. In a manner of speaking that is.
"irregardless"
Oh do not EVEN...
::sits in "do not EVEN" corner with Trudy::
re: the usage of decimate, logically/intellectually I know the original use, but I don't know that in terms of my education, I was ever taught it as such, which makes me wonder how the modern version could be considered wrong? It's part of the natural evolution of language.
(Although I hold firm on irregardless-- I know it's illogical, but seriously-- I draw the line there.)
It's got "deci" right in there.
And September isn't the seventh month anymore. I dunno, shit happens.
I have never heard decimate used in the traditional sense, nor do I find it likely that it will resume. This battle has been lost.
I agree, unfortunately.
What about begging the question? Will that ever be used correctly again? It's my favorite logical fallacy and Strega tells me that battle is lost as well.
I would say so. Frankly, the misuse is far more useful than the correct version, which is generally kind of confusing anyway.
The misuse of it should really be "this RAISES the question," but I also agree that the "begging the question" battle has been lost as well.
This is a job for erinaceous!
She's no prescriptivist.
She is, however, a Northern Californian now.
Buh? Since when?
Yeah, wha?
I'd like to point out if you were the one in ten Roman legionnaires killed it was still devastating.
So decimiation is a form of devastation? But to devestate is not necessarily to decimate.
And, of course, the pellet with the poison's in the vestle with the pestle...
There's a mosquito living in my bathroom that managed to sting me somewhere uncomfortable every single damned morning. It needs to die already.
Decimate it!
