I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

"Nobody is suggesting Teabaggers have carnal relationships with iguanas. Nobody is planning on drawing a critically acclaimed graphic novel based on this concept, featuring lead characters that no one would say looked strikingly similar to Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck."

I have a question for the Buffistas—a question about fire.

I live in an apartment, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. The apartment does not have a fireplace. That won't be changing anytime soon, either. I miss poking at flames.

The apartment does have a lovely common area/floodplane behind my building. I was thinking of getting one of these fire bowls so I could sit around it with my friends on crisp fall evenings, roasting marshmallows and trading links to our favorite fanfics.

So, my question. Are these things safe? We're a relatively unrowdy bunch, there are no kids around, and the drinking would be somewhere between moderate and nil. There are places without overhanging trees to set up, and I could have a fire extinguisher and a water hose handy. Other people in the complex fire up grills all the time, but they're the expensive gas things with solid covers.

What do you think? Lovely, atmospheric fun or a trauma waiting to happen?

Now tagless for your comfort.

Calli, we have a fire bowl sort of like that. We've never had any problems with it. They're nice to sit around. We roast marshmallows in ours, too.

They really just need a flat area to sit--one that is non flammable. If it's on a concrete area, I wouldn't see why it wouldn't be safe. If it's grass, you can always set up a brick base for it.

Yeah, a post about Palin, but this is the fourth time this has happened!

Palin bungles another event invitation, claiming she was never asked to attend.

Tonight’s Alaska Family Council event promoting an anti-choice statewide ballot measure was supposed to be Sarah Palin’s first public appearance since stepping down as governor. However, Palin spokeswoman Meg Stapleton now says that Palin won’t be attending because organizers never asked her. Family Council officials insist that they have been talking to Palin “contacts” for weeks and had confirmed her participation. As of today, the Alaska Family Council is still promoting Palin as one of the event’s headliners on its website:

...

The new announcement marks at least the fourth time this year Palin has played this game with event organizers:

Followed by a list....

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

I have friends with one of those fire bowls, and the only time they've had any trouble was when they had it too close to a tree AND were burning ridiculous things in it. (I can't remember what they were burning, but the tree took some heavy damage...)
