Maybe it's just because I live in DC, but wealthy does not always equal white around here.
Maybe I just notice it more in NC. But the middle-class neighborhoods I've lived in seemed to have people from a variety of races and ethnic groups, while the further up the fiscal ladder you go, the more homogeneous the neighborhoods seem to get.

Damn. One of my best friends' father died this morning. Not entirely unexpected - he'd been in the hospital two months ago with a grim prognosis, but once he'd gotten out of the hospital he'd started on a real turnaround. Unfortunately, he had a rapid decline the last couple of days and passed away today.
It's always sudden.

eta: I say this because I've been on the sidelines to something like this before, and even though it is not fun admitting a kid in these circs, it really was a necessary and ultimately very helpful step.
