Seche Vite top coat, which dries amazingly fast.
thin coats? drying between coats? 2 hours before bed?

I do those things with varying levels of success, but can't usually do both drying between coats and two hours before bed!

I don't understand how anyone can do their own nails period! My hands are too shaky. My nail lady has been doing this OPI gel thingy lately. Awesome. It lasts forever!
When I do my own nails, I slop it on and clean up later.

Nubar Diamont and, if I'm pushing it really late (like, five minutes before bedtime late), I use cuticle oil over the manicure. (Seche doesn't play nicely with me. When I don't use Diamont, I use Poshe.)
Kat, I found a cream colored sweater (with some small holes, dammit) that's 50% wool, 45% acrylic and 5% cashmere. Will that work for your project?
