I'd never heard of a groom's cake until I saw Steel Magnolias, so I think I always assumed it was a southern tradition. I don't remember anyone I know here in the northeast having one.
The red velvet armadillo was definitely the groom's cake, Kat.

We found out more about Leif's future plans this weekend. When asked what he wanted to do when he grew up, he answered, "Be a professional soccer player."
