A reader's letter to Andrew Sullivan about Captain America in the '80s (in response to an earlier post about homophobia in comics): Gays In The Comics, Ctd
...But despite this, It turns out Captain America had a gay friend.
His was Arnie Roth, a fellow WWII vet and childhood friend of Cap's. Roth had a 'roommate' named Michael, and the point was driven home that the two were lovers. At no time was Roth reduced to a stereotype. At one point, none other than the Red Skull - a Nazi of the blackest dye - captures and mocks Roth for his homosexuality. Cap's response:
"You're as good and decent a man as I’ve ever known! They can’t corrupt your love for Michael with their lies…They’re the pariahs! They’re the disease!”
...
I'm straight. But with all the crap and lies that gets served up to kids in entertainment, it got my attention at age ten. After all, if the guy who punched out Hitler had no problem with gays, who was I to argue?
That was an interesting run on Capt. America. The writer decided that Cap would have an interest in the most American music of all: musicals! All set in a very gritty NYC with Cap on his motorcycle.
I know nothing about Cobb or McKidd, but I'll do anything I can to Karl Urban!!!
How to get your Kids to Play with the Toilet Brush? With a giraffe toilet brush!
I take my shoes off a lot in dreams.
Me too! I wonder what that's about.
Cash, I'm so sorry about your sister. I'm glad she is coping OK and is hopeful for the future. Many crossed fingers for her.
How to get your Kids to Play with the Toilet Brush?
...I wasn't aware that was a desired thing.
Very sorry to hear about you sister, Cash.
Welcome to the world, Shanecookie!
I've just caught up after the weekend. Meh. I'll probably fall just as far behind this upcoming weekend.
For Aims: Daniel Radcliffe is starring in a new production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, with a rave review of his performance in a private reading that the article's writer attended.
Daniel Radcliffe was AMAZING. He interpreted the role in a charming, adorable and fresh way. He sang great. I think everyone was there to see if he could do it. And boy, he really did it. He was great. He came off as a full-fledged musical star. Those of us who saw him in Equus know he has the stage chops as a dramatic actor but now I can say that he could easily take Broadway by storm as a musical comedy star, too. After that final Harry Potter movie comes out, this guy can do whatever he wants in any medium. I loved him. And it seems to me that he is the youngest actor to play the role of Finch. And his youth made the show feel fresh and new. It had a new kind of innocence to contrast the cynicism of the world he is in.
