Johann Hari: Republicans, religion and the triumph of unreason
You have to admire the audacity of the right. Here's what's actually happening. The US is the only major industrialised country that does not provide regular healthcare to all its citizens. Instead, they are required to provide for themselves – and 50 million people can't afford the insurance. As a result, 18,000 US citizens die every year needlessly, because they can't access the care they require. That's equivalent to six 9/11s, every year, year on year. Yet the Republicans have accused the Democrats who are trying to stop all this death by extending healthcare of being "killers" – and they have successfully managed to put them on the defensive.
It was always my understanding that the Sud was for Pseudoephedrine.
I think that's right. Sudafed = pseudephed(drine), all phonetic like.
The Year in Media Errors and Corrections
My favorite, from the LA Times:
Bear sighting: An item in the National Briefing in Sunday's Section A said a bear wandered into a grocery story in Hayward, Wis., on Friday and headed for the beer cooler. It was Thursday.
The court appearance for the driver who hit me on October 4th was scheduled for this Friday, and I was summoned to be a witness, so I arranged to have the day off. Now the case has been continued -- until March 4th. I can't decide if this is good news or not.
I am not at all motivated to go to work on Friday.
Timelies all!
I found that Sudafed makes me jittery, so I don't take it anymore.
OMG, my neighbors are trying to kill me with the brownies or whatever they are cooking. I think I'm going to have to eat the penultimate candy cane off my Xmas tree...
Huh--it's been so long since I've taken either of those cold meds, I'll take your words for it (re: "sud" and "activ")!
I've been chugging cough medicine for the last three days - right out of the bottle since I have no idea where the little cuppy is. Co-worker walked in yesterday mid-chug. It was pretty funny.
Greaaaaaat. I've had such a shitty day, mostly do to technology problems. And now my dogwalker called to tell me that Cayenne had bloody stool today on the walk, so now I have to cancel my book group appearance and likely visit the vet. Perfect. And did I mention this morning I figured out that Cayenne has been peeing in the living room (not normal behavior; last time this was an issue, it was a UTI) and then when I was in the shower, she completely eliminated bowels on the carpet as well. Not normal. Vet, here I come. Hope the poor pup is okay.
