Um, well, we listened to aggressively cheerful music sung by people chosen for their ability to dance. Then we ate cookie dough, and talked about boys.

Coding and Sleeping

It looks like a group is trying to sue under the North Carolina law that bars atheists from public office, headed up by a former local NAACP president. They'll never win, but I think it's pretty tasteless to do it.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

What's the debit/credit surcharge to businesses?

It varies, but I can't remember the actual facts -- one way they pay a flat fee, the other they pay a percentage-based fee. At least that's what they told me at my old hairdresser's.

That's why they want to eliminate checks -- banks just have to pay to process them themselves, but using plastic carries a fee.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

I was in Norway last week to serve as a dissertation opponent

Do you get to jump up and yell, "Sir, I object!"?

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Direct deposit carries a fee too - I know the old board looked into accepting paperless maintenance payments from shareholders but decided it would be too expensive.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

What's the debit/credit surcharge to businesses?

Last I was privy to that information, there was a per-transaction charge for credit but not for debit. That was the better part of a decade ago.

Oh, I'm wrong, I am still privy. My brother's store doesn't get charged per-transaction at all, just a flat rate on total throughput, but that is by arrangement with an intermediary between him and the credit card companies.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

There's a restaurant I go to that won't accept either debit or credit cards for transactions under $10.

You mean "Jeg objeckter!"

No, it's all very ceremonial and you ask all of the questions. For two hours.

It's my understanding that that is a violation of the agreement they have with the credit card companies.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

It's my understanding that that is a violation of the agreement they have with the credit card companies.

I'm pretty sure I've gotten delivery from places like that, as well as shopped in stores that displayed a minimum, which is why I have a flinch reflex about small amounts. I hadn't realised that flat fees across the board might be an option.

Back in the day someone posted a link to timing at the supermarket that posited that cash purchases were the fastest, and I'm pretty sure mine aren't. Judging from my last few excursions, the advantage of being able to do much of the payment legwork while the stuff is still being rung up does save time, especially if you're not getting any cash back. And if you are, in the best case scenario it doesn't have to take more time than getting change.
