Welfare, mostly.
Really? Is that just in the US? Predominantly the no-longer-approved Mormon polygamy and cults?

From what I've read, a lot of the women in the FLDS groups register for welfare as single mothers.
I have a Quiverfull... in my pants! OK, that was a dumb joke, but maybe someone will laugh anyway....
Mostly it gives me the mental image of you trying to break the world record for stuffing live ferrets down your trousers. (A record that was, at one time at least, held by the Seventh Doctor.)
Don't know about anything non-US, but with most of the big Mormon families that have come to light (splinter Mormons, I can't remember what they call themselves) this is the case. Because only one of the women is considered legally married and therefore part of the family income - as far as the state is concerned, all the rest are unemployed and without family income. Kind of a reverse Catch-22.
My stuff on ebay is selling super cheap with like 1-2 hours to go. Makes me wonder if I should look at stuff to buy, like is everything going cheap?
Some of it is. Now if someone would just list the Fluevogs I want in my size and at a reasonable price ...
I was just coming to say what Brenda just said. The wives other than the legal one are officially single mothers and therefore eligible for welfare etc. Some of the polygamist men are notorious for having one fancy house and scattered near-shanties for the rest of his families. Support 'em or don't have 'em, you loony-toon.
(Hubby once dated the daughter of a polygamist. She brought him home to meet Dad, who asked Hubby some pointed questions about his beliefs and his willingness to move into the "community", and Hubby regretfully decided to stop seeing the beautiful polygamist daughter. Hubby's also met Charles Manson--not at the same time!--and he said Charlie was very creepy and very charming.)

I know this is not what was meant, but this reads as if being a single mother makes one eligible for welfare.
as if being a single mother makes one eligible for welfare
In Utah it pretty much does. I was advised more than once when I was younger that I should have kids and divorce Hubby and I'd be set.
If you're single without a job or assets, maybe.

Utah bends over backwards to help women with children. Hubby's ex-wife got married four times and divorced the guy as soon as she could after she had a kid. She's hardly a common occurrence, but local women I've told the story too have nodded and said, "Yeah, that's a good deal. Get a part-time job so you don't get bored and let the state take care of the rest."
Utah logic is not like Earth logic.
