You need to meet my MiL to discuss living rooms. She's done wonders with ours. As far as I can tell, she finds old ratty chairs or couches that have character, like a wing back armchair. She also collects fabrics and textiles, usually buying them for cheap over eBay, then pays an upholsterer to redo them.
WRT boy's rooms: I love a nice buttery yellow.

I actually have enough extra fabric from current pillows and stool covers to do a chair, but untuil I know what space I am dealing with I can't even look at specific pieces.
I just know the time is gonna whiz by though. From Thanksgiving to February break is always like a flash, then things slow a bit. I'll be showing our place by April and may be making offers on places as early as March.
