"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Emmett is 13! That's bananas.

That shit is bananas. And I have to note, he's not a slight little thirteen year old skinny bean. He's way solid with a broad back and shoulders and beefy biceps. And the Krav is really getting him fit. He asked for a massage last night because his hammies were tight and his legs are like trunks.

I've emphasized to him that at age 13 he's flush with HGH and Testosterone and it's all legal and normal (unlike cheaterpuss baseball players) and he basically gets double-score rewards on his exercise building lots of muscle.

It's going to be a huge adjustment moving up to Juniors in baseball next year. They use a major league size field, so it's 90 feet between bases instead of 60. The mound is at 60 feet six inches, instead of 45 feet. It's almost like going back to Single-A where anybody who could make the throw from third base was an automatic star.

this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

I would never occur to me that it would be okay to use textspeak on any sort of exam.

Sure, but you aren't the average middle-school-aged kid.

Besides, "IDK" barely qualifies as text-speak. It's hardly in the same category as writing like you're Prince ("call me b4 u c him, k?").

Or, if IDK is anathema, then FYI and OK should be banished as well.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

She's made it very clear to her classes that if you do not know the answer to a question (in this case the question was "Name one thing we talked about this week."), be clever.

I'm sorry, but this is bullshit. The student got one answer wrong. Unless the quiz is presented up front as a 100% pass/fail, she should only be penalized for her answer to THAT question. Calling her out for not being "clever" enough just seems mean to me.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Actually, I think asking for clever answers opens the door to the student and you should be more lenient.

I'd mark that one question wrong, and make a point in class that text speak is verboten.

I don't think you can flunk the whole quiz after you've asked for clever responses when you don't know the answer.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Besides, "IDK" barely qualifies as text-speak.

And maybe she was using it ironically! My friends use IDK occasionally, as in "IDK, my BFF Jill?"

Because books.

FYI is an accepted abbreviation in Webster's 10th Edition.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I'd totally expect to get busted for FYI in a school assignment too. I can't imagine it being appropriate. I'd also expect OK to be corrected to okay.
