I liked Barcelona.

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

mwah ha ha. I have gazpacho in my fridge right now, but it's Al Pastor (white) not Andaluz (red). I can't believe I haven't seen Women on the Verge yet.

Well, that's settled then. A friend of mine keeps talking about Whit Stillman anyway, so it'll be good to know what he's going on about.
I always forget how we roll, though: you hate Lost in Translation like I do, but you ALSO hate Magnolia, right?
Hah! I am wearing a Lost in Translation t-shirt right now. AIFG! But I really really hate Magnolia. It is probably my most hatiest film.

No, I loved Lost in Translation (though I haven't watched it in a long time). Part of why I loved it is because it really resonated with my life circumstances at the time. So if I watched it now, I might not feel the same way.
but you ALSO hate Magnolia, right?
There are no sufficient words to describe the depth of my hatred for Magnolia.

x-post of Magnolia hate!
All About my Mother seems to be set (at least some of it) in Barcelona. It's another one I seem to have missed. How did I skip from Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down to Habla con Ella? I thought I liked Almodovar.
And now, thanks to mentioning Barcelona, I'm earwormed with Pennsylvania 6-5000.
I have a weakness for stories about strangers' lives intersecting (see also: Crash).
Lost in Translation didn't do very much for me.

I saw it a long time ago. That was my first Almodovar.
I didn't lurve Lost in Translation but I enjoyed it and parts of it blew me away. The t-shirt is pretty awesome. I was about to say that Sophia Coppola rubs me the right way but then I remembered that Marie Antoinette didn't really do it for me. Kirsten Dunst was great and I loved the shoe porn (Chucks cameo!) but other than that I was pretty meh. I'm trying to keep an open mind about Somewhere.

I do, too (go on, act surprised), but I guess what tips my liking/disliking one way or the other is whether I like the characters. And, now that I think about it, I didn't exactly *like* the characters in LiT, but I really identified with them.
But Magnolia -- not a single character in that movie was likable to me. (Frankly, Sigourney Weaver makes a much MUCH better "inspirational speaker" than Tom Cruise does [in Jeffrey].)
