I liked Gladiator. Crowe didn't blow me away in it, but he was adequate. I have a soft spot for the historical figure of Marcus Aurelius. I enjoyed seeing how his influence reached on past his death, to the character played by Oliver Reed as well as Maximus.
Buffista Movies 7: Brides for 7 Samurai
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
And the Chris Evans recurring gag was beautiful, and couldn't be spoiled in preview.
I loved all his T-shirts.
One awesome scene that wasn't in the trailer was the bit at the end with the motorcycle and the plane. And Clay just standing there as a GIANT PLANE ON FIRE bears down on him. Totally badass. That is the kind of ridiculous shit I want to see in these movies!
He's John Fucking Winchester, man. He climbed out of hell to save his boys. He can totally do that. Not to mention beat gravity in the dive to get the trigger. No problemo.
Clay was delicious.
It totally delivered on the ludicrous action front.

I have an extra pass to see the film Drones 10:30pm tonight at the Somerville Theater. It was directed by Adam Busch & Amber Benson and stars Jonathan Woodward. Email me if you're interested (profile addy is good).
How in the world have I never heard about Repo! The Genetic Opera until now?! A movie with Anthony Stewart Head singing?! I watched the preview and it's now at the top of my Netflix queue. Has anyone seen it? I'm hoping it's going to be as awesome as it looks!
It also has Paris Hilton. I didn't actually see it, but I wouldn't get your hopes up too high.
I did actually see it, and I wouldn't get your hopes up too high.
I own it on Blue-Ray, because I think it's ridiculously full of schlock, camp, and bombast, and I have a weakness for such things.
Yeah, I do too, which is why I'm dying to see it!
An article in the WSJ by Austin Grossman (author of the novel “Soon I Will Be Invincible”):
Marvel’s ‘Avengers’: Can the Superhero Film Be Saved?
But there is a central truth about superhero films, that Whedon obviously gets. It’s not about banter or bigger explosions or CGI or moral clarity. Superheroes aren’t better or purer than other people, they are interesting because they’re f—ed up. Maybe it’s your body or your mind or your family situation- it’s probably all three. You get to a certain moment and your body starts doing amazing, terrifying things. To the point where your can fly or turn invisible or are unreasonably good at violent behavior. You’re not exactly normal; but it’s not exactly a normal world is it?
The true potential of the superhero film is seldom seen - a chance to bring a depth and detail an actor creates, to a very strange and compelling character. Most of the time it’s the opposite - they decide the word “superhero” means flattening and simplifying the story and personality to the point of deadness (in this matter Zak Penn has much to answer for - the second “Hulk” film, “X-Men 2″ and 3, “Elektra” - although his seldom-seen “Incident at Loch Ness” is evidence of talent).
