"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Why wasn't I invited to this party?!

Damn, that's my idea of a Halloween party. Though who thought it was a good idea to score an 80s horror movie party to Lou Christie's "Lightning Strikes"? It's kind of awesome since it's such a bizarre song but I can't imagine anybody but Tarantino doing it now.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I can't see youtube from here--where's the party?

It's an Australian horror movie from 1981 called Dead Kids (aka, Strange Behavior) and everybody's in a mid-sixties pop culture costume. So I Dream of Jeannie and Batman, and they're dancing to a weird sixties pop hit. The choreography is both awesome and cheesy and then everybody gets stabinated.

I saw that back in the day at an all-night horror movie festival. Fun movie, in a VERY gory sort of way. Also, a couple of scenes really combine eye and needle issues in an unpleasant way.

The same guy made the also intriguing Strange Invaders, and then seems to have disappeared (one more movie per the IMDB). He also produced Two-Lane Blacktop! Whoa!

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Any Bay Area-istas want to see a free screening of Invictus in San Francisco tonight at 7? You'd have to get to the theatre at least an hour early.

My friend Tom posted his response to Film Comment's 2009 survey, so if you like lists, this has his picks for the best of 2009, best of 1999, best of the decade, best filmmakers, etc.

Definitely an interesting list for exploring Asian cinema. Strange that he ranks directors like Eastwood and Chan Wook as best of the decade, but doesn't pick any of their movies in the top 50 of the same period.

I've seen more of his 1999 list than 2009 (didn't get out much), and I disagree strongly with some of it. I thought that The Sixth Sense was such a dumb movie that it almost contaminates the others near it. And I never got the hype about Run Lola Run. I found the characters uninvolving.

Art Crawl!!!

No Strider? No Legolas?

I mean - they're totally in Mirkwood - Legolas could certainly be there.

Well, there's some vague talk from Viggo about appearing in Hobbit 2: Halfing Boogaloo.
