I liked The Hound of the Baskervilles with Ian Hart as Watson and Richard Roxburgh (the baddie from Moulin Rouge) as Holmes. They also did The Case of the Silk Stocking, but I've not yet seen it.
Buffista Movies 7: Brides for 7 Samurai
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
Holmes: Jeremy Brett. I didn't like the Granada series much, but I think Brett did the best job of capturing what a crazy bastard Holmes is.
Movie: The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes.
...Hm, I can't seem to muster up any opinions about casting Watson.
Kinda' interesting: You Missed It: Most Unfairly Overlooked Movies Of The Decade
About half of those are "movies which have a lot of nudity in them but I swear that's not why I put them on this list."
Heh.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Lookout definitely fit the bill, though. I also liked Grindhouse and Stardust and have heard good things about various other movies on the list.
I know! I have seen about half, too. Which is really why I love Netflix, because I live in a very "New Moon on four million screens!1" kind of city, despite how big we are.
I really liked "The Woodsman" too.
Fave Holmes: Basil Rathbone!
Haven't seen "Blacksnake Moan". But a movie where a guy decides the best help he can give an assault victim is to keep her chained (semi-nude) to a radiator? Maybe something more than prudishness keeping people away. If that is not problematic or if it deals well with the problematic issue, you need to explain before I'll lend it my eyeballs. And no "deeply spiritual" is not enough of an explaination.
