From the movie-was-better-than-the-book discussion upthread: I can't believe nobody mentioned Bridges of Madison County. The Marty Stu-iest of Marty Stus, surrounded by characters composed entirely of cardboard and spitballs, and the absolute staggeringly worst final chapter in the history of lousy final chapters that increase by tenfold your hatred of a book you already thought you hated with the white-hot brilliance of a thousand burning suns; it turns out you just didn't know quite how much hate you had in you, but this final chapter was made to bring it all out. Yeah, that book.
And, really, a pretty fine, decent movie (not hurt by either the presence of Meryl Streep in practically every frame or the unspoken but distinct impression that the screenwriter also thought Marty Stu was a flaming asshole and designed the entire screenplay just to knock him down a peg or twenty).

I coulda brought that up if I'd ever read the book and could compare. I couldn't bring myself to read that book.
I loved the movie Housekeeping and liked the book okay. But that's because Christine Lahti and Bill Forsythe are gods in my book.

I can't compare LotR books to the movies. The distinctions emphasise so much about the differences in media. I love them both, different things about each. Like The Princess Bride, but I think that was a better adaptation.
