Fiona,
have you seen the version of "Memento" where they put everything together so the movie runs forward? It is on the boxed set (btw, I'm a serious Memento junkie) and I really dug that version. I couldn't believe the movie actually holds together forwards.
Restored uncut Metropolis will premiere at Berlin Film Festival
Oh my god, I would LOVE to see this. Not necessarily *in* Berlin (though that would be cool), but to finally see the original version. (Though I have to shamefully admit that I liker the Moroder version. What I'm a child of the 80s.)

I haven't. I'm very interested, but the 3-disc version costs five times the single-disc one, and I've already invested so much in this course, I just can't afford it at the moment.
I do want to talk about manipulation of time in the movies today though, so I really do need it.
I don't think I'm ever going to watch Memento, because Rio's quote about it being the same movie as Dude, Where's My Car? would be echoing in my mind throughout.
aw man. I tried to watch Memento back-to-front with the copy I own (which I would gladly trade for a copy of Galaxy Quest) but the scenes are not arranged in such a way as to facilitate this. No way am I shelling out for the three disc set.
Had a discussion with a friend the other day about the 39 steps and how superior it was to the Buchan book (which was a piece of anti-Semitic garbage). That makes we wonder: people (including me) often complain about movies which are vastly inferior to the books they are based on. But "39 Steps" can't be the only movie that was far better than book it nominally brought to the screen. Can anyone think of other examples of movies that were major improvements on the books they were based upon?

Not a movie, but I think
Dexter
as a TV series surpasses the books.
Godfather is a famous example.
The only instances of movie superiority are where I saw the movie first, so I don't know how fair that is. Jurassic Park the book bored me to tears, as well as many other of his books. The 13th Warrior was so much better than Eaters of the Dead.
I vote for Galaxy Quest over Memento! The former is such a fun movie.
The drive-in was really cool, although they didn't come to our car to offer refreshments as promised. I remembered that The Shining is not a great movie, plot- and character-development-wise. It's stunning and effective from a visual point-of-view. I must re-read the book to remind me whether the original story makes any more sense than the film's version. Jack turns up in 1921 how exactly? Random.
