according to Polanski's own lawyers, the judge wanted him to serve just 48 more days. 48!
Wow, I had no idea. And not knowing, I was assuming it was maybe five years or something....

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Yeah, I read that last night. He served something like 42 days. Just over a month. And he ran away over the possibility of another month in prison.
I can't even bear to look at these fucking petitions in favor of Polanski's release. I've lost respect for so many people. (Et tu, Tilda Swinton?)

This. It's heartbreaking.
Woody Allen signed. Andrew Sullivan commented on this amazing "lack of self-awareness."
OTOH, Kevin Smith is now even more crushworthy to me.
My biggest heartsick moments on the list of signatories were Wes Anderson and Jonathan Demme. It hurts just to type those names.
Alfonso Cuaron. Wong Kar Wai.

Kevin Smith, Luc Besson, Greg Grunberg, Javier Grillo-Marxuach.
I'm guessing that for the most part they are completely misled as to the nature of the crime and the so-called miscarriage of justice -- there's so much misinformation out there, particularly as a result of the documentary.
I was heartbroken by a quote from Whoopi Goldberg saying he should be forgiven. I know people aren't their roles, but she played Celie in The COlor Purple for gosh sakes.
I may be a bit irrational about the whole thing, because my cousin was raped and sodomized from the time she was 12 until she was 16 by her own father, and when he told her she was "too old" and he would have to move on to her sister she told my mom. There was a lot of court battle/time, but he got a very light sentance and also used to call and tghreatgen my mother (she was a social worker so she was obligated to report, although I am sure she would have anyway).
I knew about Woody Allen and I just shook my head. Of *course* he would support Polanski (I have a very low opinion of Allen, btw). I did not know about the others, though.
Wow.
