I think this happens a lot.
Totally. Disney movie deaths off the top of my head which, IME, only upset adults:
- Pre-credits massacre of 500 babies in Finding Nemo
- Parents drowning in Frozen
- Mufasa murdered in The Lion King
- Bambi's mom
Honestly, I think if I'd warned D ahead of time that there would be a traumatic scene, it would have just primed him to be traumatized by it.
The Fox and the Hound is the one Disney movie that I remember crying and begging to leave as a child.
I hated
The Fox and the Hound.
I didn't see it until I was an adult, but Jake LOVED it and wanted to watch it all the time. Hearing Jack Albertson as the mean old man just horrified me.
Honestly, I don't really remember anything about it. I never attempted to watch it again after making my mother leave the theater.
Let's have an Old Yeller slumber party!
Don't forget The Yearling.
I've never actually seen either movie, but I have read Old Yeller. Kat says "Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry" isn't sad, but I think she's crazy. We could just have a weepy reading club.
I also thought Enough Said was both great, and pretty absent some big Trailer Moment, which is kind of what I liked about it.
Where the Read Fern Grows was my big childhood introduction to animal death-based trauma. Not the best choice for my four-year-old self's first movie at the theaters.
The only Disney animated film I recall being bothered by as a kid was Peter Pan, when the alligator was trying to eat Captain Hook. And that sequence is still pretty disturbing to this day.
I was really scared of the big black dragon in Sleeping Beauty.
