Buffista Movies 7: Brides for 7 Samurai

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

We are Buffistas. This isn't our first apocalypse. -- Pix

OK, yeah. That's a rental, where I can stop the film and go away.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Riddick is 1/2 a fun Pitch Black re-hash and 1/2 a poor attempt at topping it, where everything, including the moral compass, falls apart.

The first half is very cool, though, so you can see that, and if you stay for 3/4, you can leave before the rapey references become overtones.

Compassionately intolerant

Oh no. A hulu review...EP Daily?...said the same thing about the first half and, well, there is a dog-like character that I'm given to think doesn't die, so I was so there.

I _wanted_ it to be a Pitch Black rehash...now I'm pretty sure I can give it a pass. Thanks for saving me the dosh, ita !

The entire conceit hinges on him being smarter than everyone else in the room. So at the point where it looks like he makes the only error in judgement that we can spot, it really stands out, and it precipitates the tailspin for the characters for the rest of the movie. It's hard to be sympathetic when you're thinking "WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST DO THE THING WITH THE THING WHEN THE THING BEFORE???"

And then had a better reason for the same damned tailspin, since it's their fucking fictional scenario...

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

TCM has North by Northwest on tonight. FYI.

Because books.

I caught Giant last night, right at the beginning! Such a fantastic movie. Elizabeth Taylor's Leslie Benedict is the most badass character in the movie.

After finally getting up to the Griffith Observatory, I want to watch Rebel without a Cause again. Which I know will end up being followed by Giant and East of Eden.

I haven't seen any of the three movies in a few years. Netflix doesn't have them on streaming.
