I thought they were the dinosaurs. The climate got inhospitable and they were dormant until we poisoned the planet making the climate more hospitable again.

Buffista Movies 7: Brides for 7 Samurai
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
Yep, that was my interpretation. But it's not as explicit as I thought. Newt says, "They tried before—the dinosaurs?" Which could mean, "That explains what killed the dinosaurs." The kaiju killed them and then the climate became inhospitable, and so on.
Even still I am NO dinosaur expert, but were any of them close to as vicious as the monsters in the movie? Besides the fictional second brain, did any of them have electricity flowing through their bodies? Because that is a scientific discovery!
Well, remember that they have been adapting (the EMP was new, for instance), and they've also had plenty of time to mess around since dinosaur times, so I don't think we have to assume that the kaijusaurs were all that different from our current conception of them. Well, except for the violence thing, maybe they were really nice at first but then got pissed off when the first invasion didn't work out.
I am still amused though. The aliens have all this technology to wormhole to the center of the earth. fuck it, just attack from above, aliens. We would be dead in no time.
I mean these are some PATIENT mfers. They are like Bill Murray on Caddyshack for like a billions of years.
I think the answer is Guillermo del Toro doesn't actually know anything about dinosaurs.
Which is surprising since he seems like exactly the sort of person who would have loved the shit out of dinosaurs as a kid and know more than his parents about everything from ankylosaurus to Quetzalcoatlus.
I took it as the dinosaurs were the first try.
