We just came back from Pacific Rim. I loved that film. Much more enjoyable and a better film than any of the action films we have seen this summer: IM3, STID, & MOS. I'm serious. Idris Elba (Don't Fuck with Stringer Bell) and Rinko Kikuchi were absolutely fabulous in this movie. The dialogue at times was pretty middling, but man they sure carried all of it off and then some.
Of the action movies I have seen this summer, it was the only one that didn't bore me and held my attention the entire time. I liked the beginning ~2 minutes of the film that gave the backstory. It was brisk, well done, and I followed it.
Sure there were times of unbelievability, but it's an action movie, so I am happy to hand wave. I need a movie to give me a good excuse to hand wave. I also liked being surprised here and there - which many of the other movies didn't really do for me. My fave of the summer so far. Hands down. "The East" was previously my favorite, but the latter third of the movie is so bad that it marred it for real.
So there's no ratings for Pacific Rim at Movie-Hurl.com yet; can anyone say whether there's much hand-held camera work in it? I would really like to see it, but not if it means I have to flee the theater, or lay down in a dark room for two hours afterwards...
No shaky-cam at all from what I remember. There is some 3D camera swooping, so if that makes you ill you might want to opt for the flat version.
'Suela, there is a lot of action, but I don't recall any hand held.
Note: we did not do 3-D or IMAX.
Awesome, thanks! I'll go for the 2D version, just to be safe.
I saw both Much Ado about Nothing and Pacific Rim today, the latter with a former roomie.
The former was very well done, an interesting modern-day adaptation. Amy Acker, Clark Gregg, Reed Diamond, and Sean Maher were all superb. And for the first time, I saw what people are talking about when they describe Fran Kranz as hot (maybe it's the short hair that finally did it). I didn't like Denisof as Benedick though - his nasal voice was just so unpleasant that I hated hearing him speak Shakespeare's words, and his attempts at physical comedy have always been cringeworthy to me. Also didn't like all the Dogberry stuff, but that's true of the play itself and not Nathan Fillion's fault (he was certainly a lot more tolerable than Michael Keaton in the role).
Pacific Rim
was just made entirely of awesome. Perhaps the best giant robot vs. monster movie I've ever seen.

When I click, that goes to a trailer for How To Train Your Dragon 2?
Despicable Me 2 = however many minutes of complete delight.
