Up review: Dillo was mostly kept quiet by M&Ms but had to sit on my lap because the stupid cinema chairs folded up on him, and he managed to pop the lenses out of two pairs of 3D glasses so I watched much of the film with one eye. Casper was scared at the scary parts (despite being scared of real-life dogs, Dillo was not) and she whimpered loudly. I have had more fun at the movies.
I liked it, myself, despite the unhappy viewing experience, but why the heck bother with the 3D? Watching with glasses on is annoying, and it didn't add that much. I assume the DVD will be regular?

My impression is that it was not originally intended to be 3D, but that Disney mandated it because 3D is The New Thing These Days.
DH and I saw it for the second time last night (in-laws in town = DATE NIGHT!) and the little boy behind us kept asking his dad if he could take the glasses off.
So for those of us who have to wear 3-D glasses on top of normal glasses, is there actually any reason to see it in 3-D?
None at all, though you may miss out on seeing the very mediocre short (which is also 3D and possibly missing from the 2D prints).
I think our only choice was the 3D. Some of the previews were impressive in 3D - to Casper, who said at least twice, "It's coming right at me!"
I hate that they charge so much more for 3-D. It was over $20 just for me and Owen to see it in 3-D--and that was the only choice we had at the small theatre.
I'm pretty sure I read in Rolling Stone that Up wasn't intended for 3-D originally and switching it sort of muted some of the colors. I'm going to go back and see it in 2-D to compare.
flea, your sorry you had such a bad experience. The family next to me brought a less-than-two year old who whined some, but who wasn't nearly as loud and chatty as the mother, who felt she had to repeat her kids' comments in a normal speaking tone the whole film! I'm pretty spoiled because Owen just zones and watches movies in silence.

Okay, fine, Labyrinth is kind of a mess, and who in their right mind is going to turn down David Bowie offering to be their love slave, even if it means giving up a family member, which means the Big Important Plot Point makes NO SENSE. Don't care. I will always love Labyrinth.
I think Casper has finally gotten old enough that things in movies that are supposed to be (mildly) scary/tense actually make her scared/tense. I don't think she'd have found Up scary a year ago. So we may have to dial back on the PG movies for a while.

Yeah, our neighborhood theatre only had it in 3D too, with a $2 surcharge for the privilege of having my temples throb for an hour. $13.50 each!! Movies used to be a *cheap* date...
I did get a flier at our theatre--they're having a summer series of kids' movies for $3 (for the seat AND a free popcorn). They'll be showing Monsters vs. Aliens, Surf's Up, Kung Fu Panda, Hotel for Dogs and The Tale of Despereaux. But it's on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m.
